Deveroes-City Gear: The League

The long summer of basketball hibernation is in full swing, but it’s been one of the most exciting summers to be a Xavier fan. Unlike the perils of last summer, the Musketeers have had a wonderful beginning to the dog days of  this summer. First Edmond Sumner, then Vezenkov and Remy Abell. Though our summers are just beginning, Musketeer players are about to dive head first into the 2013-14 season.

The annual Deveroes Summer basketball league begins June 15th with a new name: Deveroes-City Gear: The League 2013. The League plays its games on the hollowed grounds of Woodward High School, culminating with the Championship game on July 27th. Teams that are participating include the usuals: Xavier, UC, Miami, and NKU, with plenty of local veterans that compete as well. For the complete breakdown of rosters and schedules, follow this link to the Deveroes-City Gear League homepage. Rosters have yet to be released, but expect those to be announced soon.

As for the division of scholarship players, only two active players may play for a given team. However, this doesn’t include incoming recruits. Given that, most incoming Muskies plus Semaj will play for Deer Park, while the Bearcats will play for Slats.  NKU students will typically play for McCluskey, and Cincinnati State players will suit up for SI Pool Care. If you’ve never been to watch a few League games, you’re missing out. It’s a great chance to see new players show off their individual talents with some great commentary. OXYGEN!

As for Xavier players, all will be slated to play in the league except recent commit Aleksander Vezenkov and Isaiah Philmore. Vezenkov is spending the summer in Europe, playing for his Bulgarian national team while Philmore is apparently ahead on his academics, which will allow him to spend some time back home during League play.

While Philmore and Vezenkov won’t be attending classes, the other Muskies will. Summer session number one ends in a few weeks with session two beginning thereafter, about the time when summer league heats up. So even though the summer is beginning for most of us, the short summer is ending for the Musketeers. Be rest assured though, the players know: “THE GYM is best place you’ll ever be”. – Late Skip Prosser
